SHORT AND SWEET-SEYCHELLES AND MADAGASCAR

This week on the short and sweet series we are eyeing the Islands… see what I did there? Try reading it out loud

We take a look at the islands of Seychelles and Madagascar in East Africa.

SEYCHELLES

The Seychelles is an archipelago of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean, off East Africa

Location

4.6796° S, 55.4920° E

Interesting Facts

1.Sychelles was once used as a pirate hide out. Pirate Olivier la Vasseur, or La Busse, was said to have left treasure stolen from a Portuguese ship in 1721.

2.The capital city of Seychelles, Victoria, is the smallest capital city in the world. It can be explored by foot in less than a day.

3.The Seychelles are the only granite islands in the world. 

4.The islands are home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites.The Aldabra Atoll and Vallée de Mai which are legally protected by international treaties to conserve the land.

5.The world's largest seed. Also known as” the double coconut” Coco-de-Mer is the seed of Lodoicea Maldiva plant is found only on two of the islands in the archipelago, Praslin & Curieuse island ,this fruit can live to weigh between 15 to 30 kgs.

MADAGASCAR

Madagascar is an island country in the Indian Ocean.It was previously known as the Malagasy Republic.

Interesting Facts

1.Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world after Greenland, New Guinea and Borneo. It is 587,041 km² in size, bigger than Spain.

 

2.It had a mad queen. Due to some of her strangest and cruel policies and practice Queen Ranavalona I was considered Mad queen by her subjects. She ruled for 33 year.

 

3.It is home to around 50 percent of the world's chameleons. One hundred fifty species of chameleon inhabit the island.

4.Madagascar is home to 70 species and sub-species of lemurs found nowhere else on Earth.

5.Madagascar was not discovered until 500AD. 300,000 years after the first appearance of Homo sapiens in Africa.
